Bodegas del Rosario

Bodegas del Rosario, formerly known as Cooperitiva Nuestra Senorio del Rosario, is presently located in the town of Bullas, 50 miles from the Mediterranean coast. Bullas is located 600 meters above sea level in the foothills of the Sistema Ib?rico, the southernmost mountain range in Spain. Bullas is a town and a D.O. designation. The Bullas region enjoys the fame of having the highest Monastrell vineyards located 600 to 900 meters above sea level. This is in contrast to the neighboring Jumilla region, which is particularly known for its Monastrell wines. However, the temperature during the day in the growing season in Jumilla is extremely hot and the nights are very hot. Bullas on the other hand enjoys extremely hot days and cool nights during the growing season. This temperature inversion, among the largest temperature oscillations of all of Spain?s Mediterranean regions, is excellent for the grapes. Furthermore in Bullas, it is usual to see a touch of snow in the vineyards during the winter.

Several years ago, several senior members of the cooperative purchased the facility and formed their own bodega. These new owners are presently building a new bodega, which is located in the mountains near their vineyards. Their vineyards which grow the Monastrell grapes for Lorca are their highest vineyards in terms of elevation.

Noteworthy, the town of Bullas has centuries of winemaking history. Many of the old houses in the town have air conduits that used to bring oxygen to the underground cellars. Residents would crush their grapes by foot allowing the must to run through a maze of conduits towards the basement clay tanks where fermentation occurred.
